What Is The
U2 Tattoo Project?

The U2 Tattoo Project is an academic research project and an international curation and study of U2 fan tattoos created by Beth Nabi, associate professor of graphic design & digital media at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla.

It explores Irish rock band U2‘s visual identities, marketing, and branding through the context of fan tattoos. The project has traveled four continents (North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia) and 14 countries to document fans. In 2016, the project exhibited in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, as part of a fan celebration of U2’s 40th anniversary. The project has been featured on the band’s official website, and project photos were published in the 2023 fan club gift: U2: The Complete Lyrics, Vol. 1: 1979–1988.

The project is a long-term academic study, with plans to publish the research, stories, and photos in a book.

The Goal.

The Goal.

The Goal.

The goal was to mimic the immersive experience created by U2's Zoo Station using the same typeface and colors. I animated text loops that were showcased at the event and used for online marketing. This unified visual design seamlessly integrated the tattoo project into the official Zoo Station experience making fans excited and eager to visit the Tattoo Project at the sphere.
